Australian Breeding Landscape

Australia’s rich history in horse racing and breeding is as dynamic and has cultivated over time to become one of the leading horse racing jurisdictions. From the early colonial days to the modern era, the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry has evolved into a powerhouse, producing champions that captivate audiences worldwide.

In the annals of Australian breeding, certain stallions stand as towering figures, shaping the course of the industry. The Australian Breeding Landscape had developed solidly since the 1900s however In 1989 the Australian industry turned on its head. The 1980s were a wild time in world racing, the inflationary impacts of a mixture of bidding wars from newly rich oligarchs, American resource tycoons and The Syndicate had driven the prices of yearlings through the roof. The progeny of Northern Dancer were worth more than their weight in gold. Shares in horses were being treated on Wall Street the same as any other share. In Australia, a jurisdiction that had fallen behind America and Europe during this time desperately needed to keep up, and the decision was made to put stud farms publicly on the stock exchange. Some saw opportunities to internationalise their companies and bloodstock, while others saw it as a means of raising capital. However, there are strictures and demands in public companies and those are far greater than operating as an individual and probably went beyond the bounds of normality. Unfortunately, as a public company, they risked failing and that risked the investment of their clients. Companies the likes of Coolmore, Arrowfield, Segenhoe and Newhaven were becoming the dominant farms. However, this structure did not suit breeding and relied on consistency, which was not realistic within bloodstock investments. The tax regime changes, promoted by C.S Hayes, Messara and Prime Minister Bob Hawke aligned with New Zealand, therefore the money that was invested was borrowed, and this was a struggle to pay back.

Arrowfield owned and run by stockbroker John Messara made one of the single most important purchases in Australian bloodstock history when he selected and secured a majority interest in Danehill, who proved to be a global breed-shaping influence, and the sire of 89 Group 1 winners. Following Danehill’s passing, Messara was the beneficiary of the emergence of his best son Redoute’s Choice. Going on to take the baton from his father, Redoute’s Choice is the most successful stallion since the turn of the century and his bloodline continues to dominate the Australian Breeding page.

Over the decades, the establishment of Australian-based farms as well as the expansion of overseas breeding empires have played pivotal roles in shaping the landscape of Australian breeding. Names like Coolmore, Arrowfield, Newgate and Darley have become synonymous with excellence, breeding generations of champions and setting the standard for quality and innovation. These establishments, nestled in highly successful regions like the Hunter Valley and Victoria, boast pedigrees adorned with accolades from prestigious races around the world.

The success of Australia’s breeding industry can be attributed to its diverse and fertile regions, each offering unique advantages for nurturing equine talent. The lush pastures of the Hunter Valley provide ideal conditions for rearing champions, while Victoria’s rich racing heritage and top-tier facilities attract breeders and investors from far and wide. The sun-kissed plains of Queensland and the picturesque landscapes of Tasmania also have extremely valuable breeding bases with well-credentialed farms popping up in every corner of the country. Contributing to the tapestry of Australian breeding excellence.

There is no better example of the emergence of key farms than that of Newgate Farm. Newgate was founded by Henry Field in 2010 with only a handful of mares on a 250-acre leased property. Today, Newgate is one of Australia’s powerhouse stallion operations and thoroughbred nurseries encompassing 1,700 acres of prime Hunter Valley land. In 2012, two years on from its inception, Newgate acquired the Group 1 winning sprinter Foxwedge and the Newgate stallion division was established. In 2024, Newgate is home to 14 stallions including Australia’s most elite stallion statistically, Extreme Choice who stands at a stud fee of $275,000.  Newgate is also home to Australia’s Champion First Season Sire Russian Revolution, along with Champion 2YO and leading sire Capitalist.

In the modern era, the breeding industry continues to thrive amidst a rapidly changing landscape. Advancements in technology and breeding techniques have revolutionized the way horses are bred and trained, ushering in a new era of innovation and competitiveness. Major auction houses like Inglis and Magic Millions, along with bloodstock agents, play integral roles in facilitating the sale and acquisition of elite bloodlines, driving the industry forward with each transaction.
